Unknown Unknowns
Exhibition at the Embassy of Portugal, Washington, DC
Here we encounter a new perspective on Inês Tique’s narrative. Connection is seen through pure abstraction and color field language. Escaping her tendency to represent interrelations between humans and nature through intertwined compositions, crossed paths and boundaries. The gestural action painting of her past artworks now gives space to a controlled brush stroke, complex color-making decisions and proportions. Her habitually intuitive way of representation moves to an analytical process thinking.
Unknown Unknowns reflects on a constant subject in our lives. It’s a voyage into our nature of explorers and fearless humans. Accessing places and establishing relations that we don’t even know we don’t know. Bringing our senses and instincts alive. Polarity and gravity, movement and rhythm, union and balance, chaos and order, transcendence and infinite. She creates a new environment where everything comes together.
This body of work was made at The Art Students League of NYC during the school year of 2023/2024 under the serious and rigid supervision of artist James Little. The journey with James Little made the artist reflect and analyze how her representation can communicate in separate color fields. Where lines become unions and not divisions and where rhythm takes an important role.
